Lunar New Year

Lunar New Year signifies the beginning of a new year on the lunar calendar. Celebrated traditionally by Asian countries, and lasting up to sixteen days, each Lunar New Year marks a transition between the twelve zodiac animals. During this celebration, red envelopes containing cash and gifts are exchanged among family, friends, and collegues, symbolizing good fortune for the new year. Parades are often organized as well to celebrate the coming of the new year.

As this is recognized as a significant national holiday in many Asian countries, people utilize the time off to travel back to their hometowns to gather with their families.

In Hakka Chinese culture, Lunar New Year is celebrated with “Qilin” dances, also known as unicorn dances. These dances differ from the traditional lion dances seen commonly during the new years, utilizing unique steps and patterns, and music. Hakka martial arts culture and qilin are closely intertwined with one another.
